TRIANGLE RELOCATION RESOURCE

Triangle School Options

School planning in the Triangle begins with the property address—not simply the city name or ZIP code. Depending on where you live, your home may be served by Wake County, Durham, Orange County, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, or Chatham County schools.

Families may also consider magnet programs, year-round calendars, charter schools, private schools, and homeschooling. Because attendance boundaries, enrollment caps, application periods, and transportation options can change, buyers should verify every property through the appropriate school system before making a home-buying decision.

Start With the Exact Property Address

A Cary, Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill mailing address does not always tell you which school district or individual school serves the property.

Before making a home-buying decision, use the official school district’s address lookup tool. Check the elementary, middle and high school assignments separately, and make sure you are reviewing the correct school year and grade level.

Buyers should also confirm:

  • Whether the assigned school uses a traditional, modified or year-round calendar

  • Whether the school has an enrollment cap

  • Whether transportation is available

  • Whether an approved assignment change may affect a future school year

  • Whether a magnet, year-round or other application is required

  • Whether a new-construction address has been added to the district’s system

MLS information, builder marketing and third-party websites can be helpful starting points, but the applicable school district should always be the final source.

School Verification Checklist for Home Buyers

1. Enter the exact property address in the official district lookup.

3. Confirm the school year and student’s grade level.

5. Check enrollment caps and transportation availability.

7. Ask whether an approved reassignment plan affects the property.

9. Review official state and district information.

2. Check the elementary, middle and high school assignments.

4. Review the school calendar.

6. Research magnet, year-round or application requirements.

8. Confirm new-construction addresses directly with the district.

10. Contact the district when school assignment is an important part of the purchase decision.

OFFICIAL ADDRESS TOOLS

Triangle public school districts

Choose the district that serves the property location, then open its official assignment or enrollment resource.

CARY · APEX · RALEIGH · HOLLY SPRINGS

Wake County Public School System

Search base elementary, middle and high-school assignments by residential address, school year and grade level.

CHAPEL HILL · CARRBORO

Chapel Hill–Carrboro City Schools

A Chapel Hill mailing address does not automatically mean CHCCS. Check the official student-assignment map.

Chatham County Schools

Search by street address and grade. For new construction, confirm that the completed address appears in the district system.

DURHAM · RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK

BEYOND A BASE ASSIGNMENT

Other school options to research

Availability, eligibility, admissions and transportation vary. Use each school or state agency as the authoritative source.

Magnet & application schools

Wake and Durham offer magnet, early-college and other application-based programs. A separate application may be required, and placement is not guaranteed.

Charter schools

Public charter schools have their own grade levels, enrollment windows, lottery procedures and transportation policies.

Private schools & scholarships

Compare curriculum, tuition, admissions, commute and before- or after-school care. Eligible families can also review North Carolina scholarship programs.

INDEPENDENT, FAITH-BASED & MONTESSORI

DAILY-LIFE FIT

Understand the school calendar

The assigned calendar can affect move timing, childcare, travel and siblings attending different schools.

Traditional calendar

Usually begins in late summer and ends in late spring, with a longer summer break.

Year-round calendar

Uses shorter breaks throughout the year. In Wake County, track assignments can affect when students attend.

Modified calendar

May resemble a traditional year with adjusted start dates or intersession breaks.

Questions to check for every home

  • What are the assignments for this school year?

  • Are any schools capped or split by grade?

  • Is bus transportation available?

  • Is a reassignment plan already approved?

  • Does an application deadline affect your timing?

  • Has a new-construction address been added?
